Frozen
A Selection of Live/Solo Performances 1993-2000

2004 Glitterhouse Records - Mailorder only

Extended linear notes:

I've had a lot of requests over the past years to release some kind of live CD but for one reason or another had never gotten around to putting it all together. Finally this past summer I sat down and listened to dozens and dozens of cassettes, CD's and MD's of myself in concert. These recordings had been sent to me over the years by friends, fans or even the promoters themselves. With my "high-tech" filing system they ended up in a box or 3, scattered over 2 continents and where they've sat collecting dust.

To be quite honest, listening to myself in concert is not one of my favorite pastimes! I hear every single mistake I make (and there are a lot of them believe me!), cringe at all my bad jokes and mindless blather and just generally critique myself in quite merciless ways. Folks tell me this is normal though but that an "artist" should look at their work and confront their limitations and even be inspired by them (the limitations) to do better work.

Yeah right. I digress here........... In the end though I found 16 songs that I liked for one reason or another and I hope that you'll like too. I think there are a couple of unrecorded songs here but mostly they are just good live performances of older material. Mistakes are still there in abundance but I AM proud of the songs and these live recordings of them. The concerts ranged from live radio broadcasts to concerts here in Europe. Below you'll see the track list. I believe this will be a limited edition Glitterhouse release and you can mail-order it in March directly from Glitterhouse although I will be selling it first during my next tour. See ya on the road!

Recordings:

01 Tornado Alley

02 Edenless

03 Bluebonnets

04 A New Heart

05 Ride Hard

Recorded @ Maltzhaus, Munchen, Germany, 1997 (Vic Chesnutt support tour).
The Maltzhaus concert was the final show of a 10-concert tour that I did with Vic and his band. It was a wonderful experience for me. Great and large audiences every night and in really good venues. Friendly folks who understood and appreciated what I was trying to do and I got to listen to Vic every night. The best case scenario for any "up and coming artists" like I was then.

06 Feeding The Rat

07 Highway 99

Recorded @ KCMU radio "The Live Room" Seattle 1993.
KCMU (they've since changed their name to KEXP) was THE radio station in Seattle for really alternative music of all kinds and especially back in '93. The "Live Room" was recorded in a Seattle recording studio and you got a DAT tape at the end of your concert. This show was hosted by Abe Beeson. . Highway 99 is a real road.

08 Dictionary

Recorded @- "Cafe la Plage" Maurepas, France- 1995.
Café la Plage was one night of a tour I did in France back in '95. My friend and agent there Pascal Redondo and I did something like 33 shows in 32 days. This song was taken off the deck onto a cassette tape but I like it. I actually wrote this song for my ex-wife to sing many, many years ago.

09 Withered Bouquet

10 First Get Over Falling

11 Who's Fooling Who?

Recorded @ "Radio Slovenja", Ljubljana, Slovenja, 2000.
The Radio Slovenja show, hosted by Jane Weber, was recorded before a live audience in a beautiful room in downtown Ljubljana. A great, great audience and totally into the music. I think 3 or 4 Cd's have been released from these live radio shows.

12 Useless

13 Ragged Caravan

14 Michigan Weather

15 Say It And See

Recorded @ "Live Music Affalter" Affalter, Germany- 1997 & 2000.
Affalter Germany is a little village over by Leipzig in the east of Germany. Not so very long ago these folks were living in the GDR and now they are totally into and enjoying live music. One of the nicest and most energetic audiences in Europe. You wouldn't believe so many people would come out for a show in such a little place but they do. Special indeed !

16 Was A Friend

Recorded @ "La Chapelle" Concarneau, France- 2000.
No TLH live CD would be complete without at least one song from Concarneau France, my adopted European city. La Chappel is 6 or 7 centuries old at least and now used for art exibitions and the occcasional small concert. The show was recorded by my friend and oft times traveling partner, fellow musician , co-producer and ex-blind Doctor, Alain LeCoirec.

I can only say that I hope you enjoy these selections. The best part for me is playing the shows of course. Making music live. Most thanks to the kind audiences but also the booking agents (Pascal, Christian, Ludger, Stepan, Carlo, Trygve, Pierre, Zlato, Aleksandar, Arnold and Larry), the promoters and drones who make the shows happen and to you of course for all the support. Also thanks to Franck and Gerrie for the great pictures, Glitterhouse Records and to the Webmaster Stefano Dainese for such a great site. Live music is such an important part of our lives these modern days but it has always been so modern times or not. Now perhaps more than ever we need the shared experience. These few songs here are a testament to some of those moments. Frozen indeed

About "Frozen":Over the years many people have asked me if I had a "live" CD they could buy. These questions were usually asked at the end of some nice concert somewhere but I always had to answer no. Until now. I guess folks just naturally wanted to have a memento. For myself, I was usually was more interested in selling the latest TLH Glitterhouse release. Those records were full of my newest songs and that material was the most exciting for me to hear and play. In any case the live CD just got put on hold, something to be done but it never really got sorted out. In the mean time I had amassed quite a large collection of tapes that fans and friends would give me of my concerts, both as a solo act and with the various bands that I've toured with. And of course what you hold now is the result of me wading though hours and hours of those concerts in search of the best versions. I am probably the worst person in the world to judge my own work though. Way too many mistakes for my ears but in the end, I choose these versions, warts and all. Thus the name Frozen by the way. Frozen in time, Frozen on tape and now Frozen into a compilation. It was hard to find a perfect cut of these songs and I don't think I did actually. One thing I realized after all these repeated listenings was just how much work I gotta do to get my playing better. Shit, I hope I have enough time! Each and every song here though is special to me. Some moment or something... I hope you enjoy listening to the songs. PS: I also found a pretty good recording of the last rehearsal of the Blind Doctors and myself (10 live and unrecorded songs!), some good concert tapes with my Czech band in the Czech Republic from 1999. I'm hoping to track down some live concert stuff with the American band from the Leaving West Tour and then I'd like to release all those songs on one CD as well. If you do happen to have any of those Leaving West concerts on record please let me know ok? Stay tuned.........
